The Birmingham Americans were charter members of the World Football League (WFL). The team did well on the field and at the gate, but still struggled, like many WFL teams, financially. The Americans, playing their home games at historic Legion Field, managed to win the league championship, the World Bowl, which they wound up hosting, in a squeaker 22-21 over the Florida Blazers. After the game, the Americans uniforms were seized by sheriff’s deputies in order to pay off the team’s creditors. The championship trophy, secured at the last minute via a local shop, ended up in a storeroom at Legion Field, where it sat for over 20 years. It’s now on display at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in Birmingham. The following season, a new ownership group was organized. The team was renamed the Vulcans. However, they folded with the rest of the league on October 22, 1975, halfway through the WFL’s second season. The Vulcans, though, along with the Memphis Southmen, applied for membership in the National Football League but were both denied.
